Sitting in a Cafe with leo/need thinking about what to get her, "Maybe we could get her a skirt or dress?" Akira suggested to the group. Honami nodded "maybe,she seemed like she'd like that.." Ami Sat there thinking,and then she gasped, "oh oh!" Everyone turned "huh? What did you think of?" Sora asked,tilting her head. "Yeah. What did you think of?" Shiho asked with a slight smile. Ami felt nervous but said her mind with confidence. "Maybe we could get Emu a cat? I have the money and I think she'd like one! I have one in mind for her already!"

She said with nervousness melting away,looking at everyone's face to see how they react,saki had a smile,she gasped "oh!! Yeah! A cat would fit her so much!! She was telling me how she wanted an animall!" Honami did a small laugh "she was? Oh yeah,I remember that,.. maybe that could be the big gift and we could all bring smaller gifts!" Everyone nodded in agreement "mhm. That sounds good,you could make her or get her an apple pie,hon!" Akira beamed, Honami nodded "that's my plan!" She blushed,closing her eyes with a soft smile. In a pet shop shiho,Ami,and Akira were walking through,to the cats in the back,the sound of children crying,cats,dogs,the sounds of fish tanks,so many sounds made Ami shudder. "You alright?" Shiho asked,making ami turn to her,giving a small nod. It was for Emu,she had to tough it out. "If you have a problem with it I'll get it,alright?" Shiho said,with flustered cheeks,and a soft smile,Ami gave a small style "alright.." They stopped walking as they got to the cat section, "so. What was the cat you wanted to get her?" Shiho asked

"A ginger cat.." she said softly,nervous about the people around her. She blushed,out of embarrassment,or something else,she didn't know. "Ah,alright,there's a.. ginger cat right there." Shiho walked over to the ginger cat,Ami following "Cupcake..." ami laughed "aww,so adorable.." she put her finger close to the cage and the cats ears perked up,as It tried to sniff her finger making Ami move her finger closer,and into the cage,the cat licked her finger,and gave a small meow. Ami and shihos heart melted, "this one." She said,she blinked "are we gonna look at anymore?" Shiho asked making sure,

Ami shook her head "nope,this one!" Shiho felt her cheeks warm at the smile Ami was giving,how gentle she was being with the cat,man shin and shizuku would so gossip bout this if they knew.

On the way to the park they had planned,the phone rang. Shiho awsnered with a sigh "yes shizuku? Mhm. Okay,wait what!? We got her tha- well sort it out," shiho had a smile as she hung up "what was that about?" Ami asked with a head tilted "apparently tsukasa and saki got her a cat to..." Shiho laughed,Ami laughed "so two cats!" She said, "she's really going to love that!"

They reached the park,to see emu around gifts and a cat.she perked up, a bright smile on her face as she raced to them "shiho!! Ami!!" She hugged shiho tightly making her gasp and ami snuck handed shiho the cat "what's that? Is that for me?" Emu gasped,Ami tensed up "y..yeah.." she said softly. "Show me!! Pretty pretty pleasee!" Emu begged,looking at shiho, shiho showed her. She gasped tearing up "A kitty!! I'm calling you tsukasa that'll go perfect with nene!!" She beamed, "it was Amis idea." Shiho said,and Emu put the cat down,it stayed by her feet as she hugged Ami tightly. "Aaa!! Thank you so much Ami!! Your both the best!!"

Eden of the East

Just finished yet another anime series called Eden of the East and will say that this is one of those anime shows that I wouldn't have watched if not for the class. This show was more on the weird side for me, especially the fact that we see a practically naked person in the first 3 minutes of the show and he was naked for a good bit in the first episode. However, after he got dressed, I will say that following the rest of the story I was able to explore the deeper societal themes the show had, relating to global issues and Japanese culture. This being dealing with the country's challenges, such as the economic pause and searching for identity in an advanced technological world.

One theme I noticed was the idea that the younger generation had to deal with societal expectations while also paving a path for themselves. I found this theme in the first episode with Akira Takizawa. The character had no memory of who he was yet he had a phone that had the power to change the world. This connects deeper with global issues where many kids in the newer generations, Gen Z and Gen X, may not know who they are completely, or will not know yet, but will be expected to change the world with the use of technology all while also paving their path. Personally, I have experienced something similar to this because I am expected to make something of myself while also appealing to societal expectations. In this case, in the show, it shows a quest for justice in a world filled with corruption.

Comparing this show with the readings, I could see that the work culture in Japan is so poor that even an old person, or ossan as Akira stated, paid other people to figure out a way to save Japan. With this Akira uses his money to put together thousands of NEETS, Not in Employment, Education, or Training, and try to disrupt the status quo to help save Japan. Even suggesting having everyone become NEETS to actually do something. This type of idea shows how poor the work culture is in Japan because there are people, or NEETS, who would like to contribute to society but are unable to due to the system that has been put into place.

Lastly, I will say that I enjoyed how Saki was at first following the neoliberalism idea, but soon converted to Akira's ideology. Due to her experiences trying to get a job, but only being able to get nearly the bottom of the barrel, she showed character development in choosing to work toward something that actually helps Japan rather than conforming to societal expectations.

This scene I felt so bad because she was only trying to get a job and the interviewer was weird.

Eden of the East is such a Refreshing Anime

The last time I watched Eden of the East I was in high school, just barely breaking into the anime fandom. Back then not only did I not understand the Japanese culture aspects of the show but I also didn’t appreciate how different it was from other anime. Now about 6 years later after I’ve lived deep in the anime fandom for so long I understand just how truly refreshing this show is. 

My rewatch began when I heard my favorite show of the new season, Millionaire Detective, was being delayed. I remembered this gem from my past that possessed a similar mechanic to Daisuke Kanbe’s personal computer assistant that could purchase anything for him at a whim, except this time it was coupled with a death game. I think this premise is what sticks out to a lot of people when they first hear about Eden of the East, but the part I think is the coolest is how the death game doesn’t involve directly trying to kill each other. Instead one person “wins” and everyone else is eliminated. This creates different dynamics to typical death game shows while still keeping true to some of the genre’s origins: forming alliances, hunting each other down, etc. The way the anime plays with the idea of the virtual assistant and the leader of the game Mr. Outside is truly inspired by the end! 

I think the second thing you’ll noticed upon watching this show that’s very refreshing is its radical ideas of political activism. I had been thinking recently about how many anime had been presenting different idealistic versions of capitalism, mainly Ascendance of a Bookworm with its “those who don’t work don’t eat” mentality, and Smile Down the Runway which I wrote a bit on a few months ago. As expected of a show whose death game revolves around finding Japan’s “savior”, political revolution is at the heart of the character’s actions, but even then the anime doesn’t take a safe approach. Multiple times they straight up say that young people should refuse to participate in a system designed by the older, out of touch generation to abuse them. While #9′s motto of “people should learn to love making money instead of spending it” isn’t totally anti-capitalist, by the end of the 2nd movie the NEETs who had been seeking political revolution formed a commune in the mall and basically split themselves from the capitalist establishment. Our main characters join them and the place is deemed as a “paradise” indicating this is definitely the kind of activism the show is actively supporting. I think the premise of subverting the power of the old generation is something that rings very relevant today, but even if you don’t 100% believe its ideologies its really refreshing how much they decided to stick their necks out here.

Finally I wanted to talk about a more unconventional thing about the anime I found refreshing: the love story. First off it doesn’t involve high schoolers, but it also doesn’t involve fully fledged adults either. Saki is an adult in name only who just graduated college and needs to find work but is having trouble fitting into the corporate world and finding a job. This setup perfectly straddles the line of the anime’s political activism and its love story as it gives Saki a reason to want to be swept off her feet and rebel with a boy. #9 is clearly manipulative at some points when he has a goal in mind like returning to Japan in episode 1, but overall Saki is the actual driving force of the relationship. Now, the women driving the relationship is not totally foreign to the harem genre but I think we can all agree the nature of the harem genre is wish fulfillment for the man and thus not very feminist. This relationship almost feels more like wish fulfillment for the women despite the show's death game elements being more typical of a audience of men which is really cool to see. I think the part I want to note most here is that Saki very much wants to be swept off her feet and she actively pursues this at every turn. Even though she describes #9 as a prince she clearly has agency when she puts herself in the more submissive role. On top of that, the writers doesn’t shy away from the standard wish fulfillment aspects of suddenly finding yourself in a man’s lavish apartment (a whole movie theater to yourself for crying out loud), but at the same time they acknowledge this with the movie director character who appears in the first movie and who constantly points out the tropes he wishes to inject into their scene. He even tries to get them into the shower together using his Juis, but at this point the show rejects his request and firmly states that while it does pander slightly to wish fulfillment it still wants to keep things safe and vanilla between our leads. So yeah I think this relationship is refreshing because it straddles this line of wish fulfillment and realism perfectly: giving Saki the more submissive role of getting swept off her feet (wish fulfillment) but only because she wants it this way (realism). As you may be able to tell from the relative paragraph lengths, stanning Saki and #9 was one of my favorite things about the show! 

So in the end is Eden of the East a perfect anime? No of course not! However, I think we can ignore many of its flaws purely for the fact that its so unique in an anime landscape plagued by repetition.

Not that I have a problem with it (far from it), but why are the preview images for what I'm assuming is episode 1 being released already when we have 3-4 weeks before Fruits Basket Season 3's premier (April 5)?

Again, I have no problem with this development, but I just wonder if releasing screenshots early was intentional and if so, why? To build hype maybe?
